The privilege of youth! At the age of just 22, director and author Peixoto shot an avantgarde film that is singular in terms of its aesthetic and narrative freedom. The boundlessness of the film’s artistry could already make you dizzy, although the reasons for it having remained invisible for decades lie more in its turbulent critical reception over time (which has ranged from cult status to indifference) and the difficulty in sourcing prints. Now available in a restored version, a sparse narrative involving two women and man floating in a boat on the open sea sets the ball rolling. In flashbacks, they recall the key events of their lives. For several of these flashbacks, cinematographer Edgar Brazil found images that exist at the very edge of the possible: the camera circles, tilts, sways, throws itself into a well and rolls over rooves, supported by the circular movements conjured up by the soundtrack. A free film. (mg)
